What I Can Do As YOUR Digital Marketer

June 5, 2024

As the quarter is finishing up, today I write about what I have learned in my digital marketing class and how I could use those skills in my future. I may not be a traditional marketing student as I am not looking for a big office job, but hoping to use what I have learned from this class and others to better my own business and career aspirations while also using my knowledge to allow for my clients to get the best results.

What I have learned

One of the big things I remember Mark mentioning during our first couple of sessions was the importance of being a T-Shaped marketer. To be a t-shaped marketer, you must have knowledge in multiple facets of marketing while also having a go-to. For me, my go-to would have to be inbound and content marketing, I still have lots to learn about these facets of marketing but they align most with my career aspirations. For several years now, I have been working as a freelance videographer, working on projects with college and professional athletes, newlyweds, real estate agents, musicians, and businesses. I hope to one day be able to work full time on my video career and provide a service to business owners that allows me to produce content that is meaningful and impactful, yet aligns with the brand’s message and idea. By improving my knowledge of inbound marketing while focusing on video content, I hope to be able to better provide a service that will produce results for my client.

To be a true t-shaped marketer, you need to have knowledge of several other marketing tactics than just inbound marketing. An area of interest for myself would be to increase my knowledge of SEO, as most of my business would come from my website. Understanding SEO will allow me to better attract clients for myself and customers for my clients. Another area of marketing that interests me would have to be organic and paid social media. Currently, most of my work is seen via Instagram, by understanding how to use organic and paid social media to my advantage, I hope to be able to attract more users to my account to increase the awareness of my brand. By understanding organic and paid social media, I will also be able to help clients of mine looking to boost their social media presence. The final area of marketing that I feel would be beneficial to learn more about would be UI/UX. Increasing my understanding of UI/UX will allow me to better improve my site, as you can probably see that it is most certainly not ideal, and better the user experience for potential clients or other visitors of my website.

Now, just because I am interested in all of these different aspects of marketing, I don’t plan on becoming a professional in all, but just bettering my understanding of these areas further than what we talked about in class and our blogs. I am not looking to start a marketing firm, but a video production company with an emphasis on marketing.

Why are you writing Blogs?

You may be wondering, why so many blogs? The simple answer is that it’s so I can get a good grade in Digital Marketing, but the real answer is so that I can spread my own personal reach and gain connection to those also going to WWU and beyond. After posting this blog, I will have written 15 blogs in total, all covering the different topics and facets of digital marketing.

A blog of mine that did surprisingly well, would have to be my article on web design, more specifically, code vs no code web design. The post received over 600 impressions and I had over 20 users view my article. I found this quite impressive as this was one of those articles that I just wasn’t able to put a lot of work into, sorry Mark.

My next best-performing article would have to be the one I wrote on Paid social media. This article doesn’t surprise me in the performance as I was able to receive almost 600 impressions with almost 40 users opening the article. I feel that most of my success came from my title and cover photo as it definitely looks more interesting than an article on coding.

Conclusion

Overall, this class taught me so much more than I was originally expecting. The structure of the WWU Digital Marketing class makes the most sense out of any class that I have taken as the class provides many opportunities to connect with those within the industry and learn more about the topics covered in class. The world of digital marketing is huge and always growing, at least by the looks of it, and I hope to continue furthering my knowledge in the field as I know it will become more and more prominent within the career path I am hoping to take.
